Hackney roll out recycling in School Dining Rooms

Following the completion a successful trial the London Borough of Hackney is introducing mixed recycling bins into dining rooms at local primary and secondary schools. The move is one of a number of initiatives to raise the overall level of recycling within the borough.

Although a recycling service has been provided for schools, much of the material that could have been collected has not, because of a lack of suitable bins, particularly within dining rooms. In the trial a variety of bins was supplied by Leafield Environmental and participating schools collected data on the amount of waste collected. The results indicated that on average each school could possibly collect just under a third of a tonne of material each year from dining room waste.

In addition to the material collected, the Envirobin recycling bins were also assessed for sturdiness, durability and practicality. As a result a mix of 100 and 140 litre Envirobins fitted with ‘Mixed Recycling’ apertures is to be supplied to up to 100 schools.
